Summary: Post-Epitaphs, the royal couple spend time alone with their baby and each other.
Location: Lindblum
Date: January 1803
Warnings: None so far!
Whenever she gazed upon her infant son, each of Ashe's concerns about the outside world just... seemed to temporarily fade away into insignificance. A tenderness upon her face which very few had witnessed, the Dalmascan princess lifted Shain from the comfort of his blanketed basket to lay him upon the centre of the bed. She half lay beside her baby, whose very existence was nothing short of miraculous, her fingers touching to the impossible softness of one clenched hand. Almost one month old, now, and Ashe and Rasler were quickly learning that taking care of a newborn child was a challenge as considerable (and in some ways, daunting) as ruling an entire nation of people.
Soon, he would be hungry again.
A sudden, unexpected longing came over her - that hand lifting to stroke the platinum, downy hair inherited from his father, gently cupping the entire crown of Shain's head and silently marvelling at her part in having made him. All the while the tiny prince's eyes fixated upon Ashe, rosy lips pursing alongside soft sounds which led her to wonder whether her son was trying to communicate with her. Over the past week she'd noticed the beginnings of a change, one which the midwife had explained on the very day she gave birth; those eyes had gradually lightened, transforming into identical reflections of Ashe's own shade of gray. Rasler had been granted his wish.
The Epitaph incident; it had only served to heighten awareness of the potential risks to sky people and natives alike. No, she would never be so complacent with her own safety again. Her family deserved more than that, failing them wasn't an option. Familiar footfalls in the corridor ended that less pleasant of thoughts, had her smiling down into her baby's intense gaze where they lay together.
"... Your father has returned."
