Zidane pondered her answer for a moment, glancing up at the ceiling once more before he grinned broadly and looked back over at her, nodding his head in acknowledgment.

"You know what? Probably exactly that. Maybe the first mouse does get eaten by the cat, and maybe he gets away with the cheese. The story doesn't say," he answered without missing a beat, seeming almost proud of this development in their conversation. Mostly people would just say something along the lines of 'I dunno'. He certainly had the first time he'd heard the story all those years ago. "Because the story isn't about the course of nature. It's about choices, because all we do know is that the mouse that stayed in the hole wound up starving to death without doing anything at all.

"See, it doesn't really matter how history remembers the first mouse. Whether he lived or died, whether he was foolish or brave. What matters is that he took a chance and didn't let the 'what ifs' wear him down. He just... went," Zidane pounded his fist against the table for emphasis. "And that's the part that matters. So I'm gonna be friends with you, and if the cat wakes up then that's that. At least I won't ever starve to death."

Zidane paused to give Fran a chance to take the story in, smiling encouragingly at her.
