Nobody could say that Regent Cid wasn't generous when it came to his adopted daughter, Eiko. In fact, some said that he was too indulgent. But on this, the evening of Eiko's tenth birthday, the citizens of Lindblum were ready and eager to celebrate. A free ball! Free drinks, free food, and a free pass into Lindblum Grand Castle. Many had failed to acquire tickets in time and were disappointed, but the lucky few piled eagerly into the castle.

Security was tight, and every single guest was checked by the guards before being allowed to enter. Once inside, they would find a wide and sumptuously decorated ballroom. A small group of musicians played slow and ambient music, while the party guests swayed across the floor dressed in all their finery. What could only be described as a flock of moogles flew or scurried around the room, offering glasses of champagne and various sweet treats. Regent Cid himself sat on a grand throne at the head of the room, nodding graciously at the guests who came to pay their respects.

The ball was already in full swing, and the party would go on for a long while yet.

Seeing the lump of dragon armor against the wall, Refia did what any of the Warriors of Light would have done - assumed it was one of them and made her way over to stand in front of it. "Ingus! Ingus, come on, you have to come out and be social at some point!"

...What... Of all the encounters he'd had for the night, this had to be one of the strangest so far. Kain looked at Refia and frowned. But once he set her straight, she had to leave him alone, ...right? So Kain could only hope.

"I'm not Ingus."

He could hope.

He would be wrong.

"Oh!" Refia's hands flew up to cover her mouth; indeed, now that she got a better look, it was obvious that it wasn't her unofficial brother. Ingus was tall, but not quite that tall, and his hair certainly wasn't that long. Also, his voice was much too deep. The dragon armor had fooled her for a moment there, as she'd fully expected Ingus to muscle his way into armor for the event, but not anyone else to as well. "I'm sorry! A friend of mine is a dragoon, and I thought you were him for a moment..."

An easy enough mistake to make, Kain would have to agree. But Refia didn't go away after that.

"What's your name, then?"

Kain realized with a growing sense of dread that she wasn't going away so easily. He didn't have any excuses on hand to allow for a quick escape, either. Perhaps that was something worth figuring out for the next time.

For now, he looked at her and made his attempt to converse. "Kain Highwind. And you are..."

It probably would be, Kain. You are, however, too late for that at the moment.

"Refia, I'm a synthesis apprentice in the city. Ingus is a guard here in the castle and he helps look after Eiko, so... I'm sorry, I really thought you were him for a moment there."

Whatever he was in for, Kain couldn't begin to imagine it. For some reason he had a creeping sense of dread that he'd never be able to get away from her, and that this was not a Good thing.

"...Oh. I wasn't aware that they had Dragoons in this castle." Especially since his armor was getting quite a few odd stares.
