Event: Eiko's Birthday Ball

Summary: A big party for a small girl. Yep, it's Eiko's birthday and she's having a ball.

Nobody could say that Regent Cid wasn't generous when it came to his adopted daughter, Eiko. In fact, some said that he was too indulgent. But on this, the evening of Eiko's tenth birthday, the citizens of Lindblum were ready and eager to celebrate. A free ball! Free drinks, free food, and a free pass into Lindblum Grand Castle. Many had failed to acquire tickets in time and were disappointed, but the lucky few piled eagerly into the castle.

Security was tight, and every single guest was checked by the guards before being allowed to enter. Once inside, they would find a wide and sumptuously decorated ballroom. A small group of musicians played slow and ambient music, while the party guests swayed across the floor dressed in all their finery. What could only be described as a flock of moogles flew or scurried around the room, offering glasses of champagne and various sweet treats. Regent Cid himself sat on a grand throne at the head of the room, nodding graciously at the guests who came to pay their respects.

The ball was already in full swing, and the party would go on for a long while yet.

"Irvine," she scolded him. "You both know I would never do that."

But she took his hand with a smile and led him onto the dance floor. Maybe Squall would get jealous. Probably not. He ought to know as well as Selphie that Irvine and Rinoa were just friends.

He chuckled as she lead him to the floor, "I'm joking, come on it's a party, we're suppose to have fun aren't we?" He found the whole thing amusing, Irvine knew better than anything, Rinoa was a great woman, but he liked Selphie more than anything. That and Squall was his friend.

And he wasn't the type to cutting someone else's grass, so to speak.

"Yep," Rinoa replied, as they started to dance. "You seem a lot happier recently. I didn't realise you missed Squall so much," she teased him.

Irvine was good at dancing, he had to be, after all women love a man who can sweep them off their feet. Least that's what he thought. A simple grin came on his face as he stated, "Not just Squall, Zell too. It feels like my family is back together again. Though I would like to be back home but, hey, you make do with what you got right?" Course the fact he wanted to tackle Selphie to the ground and make out with her no matter who would see helped in his happy mood.

The cowboy grinned and quipped, "Besides you're one to talk, you look like you're a ray of sunshine now."

"Well, that's because my friends are here too," Rinoa answered, twirling around with a grin.

He chuckled twirling her a bit and asked, "Oh? So it isn't because the fact Squall came back so you could probably suck face with him." All of this in a light and comedic tone, before pulling Rinoa in again.

"You are so crude," Rinoa said, making a face. She wasn't really mad though; she kept her tone as light as her feet. "And we're nowhere near that stage yet anyway. We've got to take things slow, so don't be too pushy, okay?"

"Trust me, I don't think you'll have a problem with me being the pushy one," he quipped knowing full well that there someone else who would do the pushing for the entire group.

Irvine smirked and added, "I think everyone is happy on the Garden now. But hey what do I know right?"

Rinoa held Irvine's waist firmly as they circled around the dance floor. "I don't know, what do you know? How are you and Selphie doing, hmm?"

When he heard the question about Selphie and him, he had a bit of a frown, then he added, "We're okay." Well she might be, but he wasn't. Mainly because a shirtless sky pirate saw more of her than he did, and she didn't even feel guilty.

But he REALLY didn't want to talk about it as he put his hands on her shoulders dancing with her. "And as for how much I know...well it's zero to little. Aside from training and women of course." he added as a chuckled escaped at the end.

"You really should try taking up another area of expertise," Rinoa teased him. Her expression became more serious as she went on. She'd noticed that Irvine had changed the subject. "And are you sure about you and Selphie? Did you resolve whatever it was that was making you act weird a while ago?"

Way to bring up bad memories Rinoa. Another frown when she said that as he added, "Yea...everything is fine." The cowboy still had a nagging itch about the assassination, and now with talking about Selphie with what happened. Thank goodness he didn't want to start another fight in here.

He shook his head and asked with a fainter smile, "So why aren't you with Squall?" Hopefully avoiding the conversation.

"Because sometimes you have to play hard to get," Rinoa replied. Then she shook her head. "Not really, I just wanna make time for my other friends too. Especially the ones who say everything is fine and then change the subject..."

The music ended and Rinoa came to a stop. She looked up, still standing close to him. "Do you still not wanna talk about it?"

Yea, that didn't work, when the music stopped Irvine shook his head and replied, "It's not that, it's just...sometimes I think..." He laughed and added, "I don't know maybe Selphie..." Again a shake of his head, he really had no idea to put it. He knew Selphie didn't hate him but at the same time maybe she didn't think Irvine in that sense.

Finally he blurted out, "Maybe I'm just jealous."

"Jealous? What of?" Rinoa was a little surprised at the admission. With the way Irvine behaved, she thought it was a bit rich of him to get jealous. Selphie certainly didn't flirt any more than he did.

He smirked looking down and putting his hands in his pockets and stated, "I don't know...just certain things and people rub me the wrong way. And..." He really didn't want to say...not in front of Rinoa at least. Already what he said was too much.

He looked up and replied, "You know what, it's nothing...I mean I'm me, and I know that I'll be alright."

"You mean someone at this party?" Rinoa looked around, wondering. She hadn't gotten along with everyone she'd met in Gaia, but unlike Irvine she was never vague about it. His half-answers were as frustrating as Squall's silences.

Irvine's head shook as he answered, "No, no one at the party...just...don't worry about it Rin. Like I said, I'll be fine...and me and Selphie will be okay." He's lying cause it irked him still, but he knew Selphie loved him...right?

"Oh, fine," Rinoa said, giving up. "You go dance with Selphie again. I know you want to. I need to go and find Squall, I bet he's lurking in a corner somewhere..."

She grinned at him before turning away to look around the ballroom.

He grinned back and called out, "It was an honor to dance with you Rin." He chuckled as the cowboy mingled back into the party.
