This was the life. Rinoa relaxed on a sun lounger, soaking up the rays. Behind her sunglasses, her eyes were closed. She could hear the waves lapping gently against the beach in the background. It was as though the dragon invasion had never happened.

A group of holidaymakers passed by, laughing and joking as they headed for the sea. Rinoa sat up to take a look around. Hmm. Maybe it was time she went for a swim. But first she needed to reapply her sun cream. She smoothed back her hair and picked up her bottle of sun lotion. Now was there anyone around who might want to help?

Kain immediately looked over his shoulder, expecting a certain annoying ninja to be right behind Rydia. Then he glanced in the other direction to make perfectly certain he wasn't following. Only after that, could he relax enough to talk.

"It's nothing that you need be concerned over..." Really, why did everyone see it necessary to pry?

Rydia sighed a bit. Getting Kain to open up about anything at all was akin to pulling teeth, at times. She knew there was only so much she could expect, but it was still frustrating, even when going for the goal of making light conversation.

"Believe it or not, you're a friend. I'm allowed to care." She crossed her arms.

"You're right, I wasn't so sure, after that toading incident..." Only half-serious, but Kain had a way of making such things still sound that way completely. He attempted to change the subject. "...Where is that royal pain in the ass, anyway?"

Rydia rolled her eyes at mention of that toading incident. You both deserved it...and he's around. I think Cecil's talking to him now. Don't worry, I wasn't going to risk dealing with you both at once again."

Oh, no, she had very much learned her lesson there.

"...Good." While he would fight beside him in battle to defend their temporary homeland, Kain still couldn't stand to be around Edge in circumstances where they actually had to talk. "So... is there truly anything wrong with my taking some time to be alone?"

Rydia shook her head. "No. I just wanted to see that you were at least enjoying this trip a little. I know it's not your typical idea of fun, but after everything that happened...I thought everyone deserved a break. You, too."

Kain sighed heavily. "But I am taking a break. If I weren't, I'd be training right now." Not to mention, he would be fully armored.

There was a flash of a grin at that. Rydia wasn't at all surprised, but she decided to let the subject go. As long as Kain was on break, she was content. "I know, Kain. How's Zephyr doing?"

At least she wasn't pushing that subject, and for that Kain was glad. He even seemed to lighten up at mention of Zephyr, still having the attitude of a proud new parent. "She's gaining more strength every day, and becoming more curious, as well... she doesn't seem to be as fearful as before, either." While Kain certainly wanted to encourage Zephyr to be aggressive when needed, it was good to see that she was learning not to lash out at random. It was an important lesson to have in place for when she was much larger.

Rydia nodded, genuinely interested in the dragon. She may not have the affinity that the dragoon does, but nonetheless she found his new role fascinating...and his attitude a little cute, though she knew better than to say so aloud. "I'm glad. Maybe I'll be able to greet her again soon?"

Kain was glad for that interest, since it meant she at least accepted Zephyr and wouldn't question his choice to raise her. That meant a lot to him. "You certainly will, for as long as I'm in the area. It'll be good for her to become more used to you anyway."

"Will I have to bribe her with...whatever you feed her?" Dragon food was gross, but Rydia really had seen a lot worse in her time. For the sake of making peace, she could stand to try it.

Kain smirked, a little, liking the idea of disturbing her even just mildly. "It's in her nature to eat the way she does. As for bribery... perhaps? We can see how she reacts to you this time, and try further from there." She was less skittish now that she was stronger, but it was still a good idea to have a back-up plan of sorts.

Rydia reached over to poke him in the ribs, upon seeing that smirk. There was a brief moment when she wondered if he was ticklish, but even she didn't care try to find out, yet. "Good. I take it she's resting now, but maybe in a bit?"

He wasn't very ticklish, especially given the armor he wore, but he did make a face when she poked him. Still, since the subject remained on Zephyr, he didn't become annoyed at all. "She is, at the moment. At her age, she still does need a great deal of sleep... but I'll eventually take the excuse of checking on her to leave here." It was a perfect way to get himself out of here, really.

Rydia nodded, unsurprised. "You have your duty. I understand." She knew he would likely grab any reason not to linger longer than he felt obliged, but raising Zephyr was a reason she could support. "Still...take the peaceful moment for what it is. I don't think we're likely to see many of them, in the coming months."

At least he wouldn't have to stay here much longer, since he could claim he needed to check up on Zephyr at anytime. "I have to agree... after everything that's happened... it seems to only get worse, each time." Although Kain himself had found it easier to fight dragons, something he was equipped to do, than deal with Memoria or the Epitaphs. The dragon attack still seemed to have had the most worldwide devastation.

"All the more reason to be careful." Rydia crossed her arms, hoping he would be more cautious now that he had a young one to support. Still, she knew that he was also a warrior and wouldn't shirk his fair share of battle. It was difficult, knowing that Gaia's events might yet cost more lives, possibly those dear to her. And was there ever a guarantee of them returning?

Kain looked at her thoughtfully. She was right that he couldn't really sit back if there was fighting to be done. He would be protecting Zephyr by fighting their enemies... and given a few months, she would be large enough to be helpful in battle as well. "I'll attempt, but I must always do my part to defend against anything that threatens us... No matter what form it might take."
