Characters: Mjrn, Ramza, Kain?
Progress: Ongoing
Summary: Indigo Dragon hunt
Location: Esto Gaza
Date: June 1804 (pre-Tidus/Yuna wedding)
Warnings: TBA

Mjrn had no more love of the Lost Continent's cold climate any more than she did when visiting Narshe. There had been little thought in her mind to return...but people in need could not be ignored. If the dragon was truly a threat, then she would aid in eliminating it. That her new partner, Ramza, might posses relevant knowledge would be a boon to them as they sought the creature. If Kain was able to join them, all the better. Hopefully soon, the people of the holy shrine would be secure from the threat.

Thus it was that the young dragoon paced at the edge of town with spear in hand, waiting for her partner to arrive. She was eager, bordering on impatient, and it was all she could do not to run off without him. Yet her demise in Narshe had cooled her head a little; there were promises made regarding her welfare, and Mjrn would do her best to keep them. She glanced up to the sun, barely past midday. He would be here soon, she hoped. In the meantime, the young Viera remained watchful, all the more so for her diminished senses.

Unlike Mjrn, Ramza still knew nothing regarding the world of Gaia. He had no idea what to expect once they traveled to the Lost Continent, but the sellsword was glad he brought a cloak in Figaro. While he had no need for the dark green cloak while visiting the desert kingdom, Ramza found himself thankful he brought it nonetheless. He told Mustadio that he would sure enough return to Figaro after this expedition, but he had yet to inform Agrias of anything. He needed to call the lionsguard knight soon, just to be sure that she was well. After being swept up within the conflicts of this realm, Ramza found himself with very little time to act freely.

Hurrying along, Ramza came to a slow halt once he spotted a long-eared woman nearby. The Viera looked terribly out of place in this drab setting, much like how Fran looked out of place aboard Balthier's Strahl. Figuring the woman to be a kin of Fran, Ramza did his best not to stare at her long ears. "I beg your pardon, miss." He said with a faint smile.

"Are you 'Mjrn'?"

After spending months, even years on the run from the Inquisition, the heretic certainly knew how to wield a blade by now. He may not boast in the same skills as the Thunder God, but Ramza can certainly hold his own. He had to grow up fast after tossing his title as 'Beoulve' to the wayside. As much as he hated to admit, Ramza learned much from Ser Gaffgarion during his years a sword for hire. Even though the Fell Knight turned against him and his comrades, Ramza once admired the elderly knight in a similar way he once admired his lord brothers. However, that is no longer so.

"The pleasure is all mine." He recited quickly. Noticing that the Viera seemed to be slightly distracted, Ramza glanced over his shoulder to see if the third member of their party was anywhere near. "I take it he shall be late." Ramza replied. "Fear not, I would rather wait for our third comrade than rush to face this dragon-like fiend with just the two of us."

Kain wasted no time in getting to the hunt's destination, prepared as always for a challenge. There was no one better equipped to handle a threatening dragon than someone with his skills, after all. Mjrn would be helpful to have along for the same reason.

He kept an eye out for her when he arrived, since he'd recognize her right away. It took a little bit of looking around, but finally he noticed her and the other fighter who'd signed on for the hunt. He headed toward them and simply nodded greeting once he was close. As usual, he was serious and ready to get to their task right way. "Are we ready?"

Glancing over towards the third hunter, Ramza's eyes widened slightly. The man was a dragoon. While he suspected that Mjrn was also a dragoon because of her choice of weaponry, the young swordsman hadn't expected to meet another. This was looking good. If there were two dragoons accompanying him then, the fiend will surely fall.

Ramza smiled faintly as he nodded towards Kain before turning his attention towards the Viera. A frown appeared briefly as he thought back upon the events that transpired between a former Templar and his eternal love. "You see, in my world such a dragon existed. A beast who matches the description of the fiend we seek now. Although, the dragon I speak of was no mere beast, but rather a beautiful woman cursed by a wicked cleric." Wondering idly how Beowulf and Reis were doing, Ramza silently prayed for the safety of all his comrades.

"Her name was 'Reis'."

With a light frown, Kain looked uncertain about this tale being told. Was it indeed relevant to what they were after? He figured it best to find out. "You believe this connected to the dragon we're seeking? That it's the same one? ...Would you have any way of knowing for certain when you see it?"

Glancing towards Kain, Ramza answered him curtly. "Her indigo scales, and green-hued wings are more than enough to determine her from other fiends. However, it is her demeanor that is unique in itself." The first time Ramza ever met Reis, it was within the snowy mines of Gollund. She was in peril, cornered by fiends of all shape and sizes. A demon spawned by the Lucavi's might lead the charge against her, but luckily Ramza & his comrades arrived in the nick of time. Possessing the Aquarius auracite gem within her jaws, Ramza claimed another legendary zodiac gem on that day.

Ramza nodded to Mjrn once she suggested they make haste. "Aye, let us not dawdle!" Hoping that the both of them were familiar enough with this land, Ramza decided not to lead for once. He was observing the area with a keen eye, but not leading in worries he would get them all lost. If Reis is truly here, then he hoped the dragon wasn't in peril.

Beowulf would never forgive him if any ill befallen upon his cursed love.

"Then let's go."

As they started along on their away, Kain held his spear in a ready position. He kept an eye out, as well as listening intently for signs of the dragon's presence. "Then we'll leave it to you to determine if it's her... but we may have to act anyway if the danger is too great." He figured it was probably understood, but felt it important that it was said.

It was frustratingly chilly here at Esto Gaza. The road before them was paved with ice, making it quite a slippery trail even for experienced travelers. For Ramza such a place reminded him of the very mining town he mentioned so briefly earlier, Gollund. The white untouched snow reminded him greatly of that faithful day. Not only was Gollund the town he traveled two with Beowulf in tow to search for Reis, but it was also the backdrop of another key event.

Who would have guessed that the hands of a mere heretic would rescue the stepson of Count Cidolfus Orlandeau? The two were originally heirs of two different fractions, Olan Durai of the Southern Sky and Ramza Beoulve of the Northern. If fate had played its course, the two would have been future enemies upon what will forever be known as the War of the Lions. Fortunately, such a tale never unfolded.

"Stay sharp! These tall glaciers can conceal anything."

Lost, confused, and alone. All these feelings swirled within Reis and dominated her very thinking. Beowulf had found her, had he not? Then where was he? Where was she? Fretful and in a daze, she resumed her miserable pacing back and forth across the snowy landscape outside the Cathedral of Esto Gaza, her heavy feet compacting the snow with each step.

For the incoming hunters, she would be difficult to miss and easy to strike. Deep indigo scales were a stark contrast to the variations of white and gray from snow and mountain, marking her as one of the Holy Dragons. Her distress left her unaware, even moreso the easy target. And targeted she became- by monsters.

Whale Zombies and Gigan Octopi closed in around her. Only once surrounded, did she even become aware of their presence. It was not in her nature to fight, nor could she still her mind, even to defend herself. One step, two steps, and more moving backwards, found her attempting a retreat which only backed her against the foot of the holy mountain with nowhere to flee.

Kain had to agree with Ramza's assessment, already sure they'd be in for a long search if the dragon was crafty and clever enough to lay low. But from what they'd heard, it was doubtful their opponent would stay hidden for long. He kept watching for anything of interest, stepping carefully on the icy path but still with an effort to move as swiftly as possible.

As soon as they neared the area, he thought he heard sounds... but it was hard to know for sure from too far away. "Something's there... Right ahead!" Kain's pace quickened and he rushed along until he could see the scene unfolding near the Cathedral. There was their prey, surrounded by a number of flying monsters. This would be no easy task with even more to fight... but Kain welcomed that. Staying in the air would be to his advantage, for sure. He readied himself to Jump.

Staring at the scene ahead with wide eyes, Ramza broke out into a run once Mjrn cast her magick upon them. "It's her!" He yelled. "Reis!" Literally snatching his sword from it's sheath, Ramza tore his cloak off him as he drove his blade into the side of the nearest fiend.

Much like last time within the depths of the mind, Ramza willingly charged forth with steel at hand. With the Viera attacking the Gigan Octopus, the swordsman focused himself upon the Whale Zombie before him. Slicing away with little hindered, Ramza had to pace himself when the beast lurched forward to strike. He quickly dodged the creature's strike, narrowly escaping what would have been certain death if the floating corpse would have clamped down upon his head.

"Be swift! That is her!" He yelled towards the others. Despite his age, the boy certainly seemed more than capable with that sword of his.

Only the familiar voice of Ramza calling out her name was enough to prompt Reis to any action save more retreat. If the young knight turned mercenary were present, then surely Beowulf stood near and ready to take her from this place as well. Desperate to see him once more, her draconic eyes scanned the area. Yet this was futile as she could not find him for the violent chaos erupting around her. There were people and monsters and a sentient being not human and yet not creature either.

Shards of ice magic from a Gigan Octopus ripped across her back, leaving her scales ripped near her wings. A below of pain rang out into the frosty air. She swung about to find the source of her agony, leaving her open to an attack from the rear, as she remained surrounded and cornered. Locating the monster who was preparing for another blast of Blizzaga, Reis finally gave way to instinct and opened her mouth to breathe.

Gold streaks of electricity streaked out of the dragon's mouth, crackling and crashing with thunderous sound as they coursed around and through the monster. The Thunder Breath was enough by itself to destroy the Octopus, finally freeing Reis to seek better footing against the attacks. She scrambled for a position two more feet up the mountain on an outcropping of rock just big enough to hold her and no more. Defensible against ground attacks, but for anything in the air, an easy mark to hit.

Kain heard Ramza's shout while still midair. His target wasn't the dragon herself anyway, fortunately... He swiftly descended, his spear jabbing straight into the middle of a Zombie Whale. The Whale retaliated with a heavy slap of a fin, sending Kain toppling over on the slippery ground. He rolled aside from a second attempted strike, hurrying back to his feet.

The Haste aided his motion and he regained footing without problems. Then Kain had just enough time to get airborne yet again. He jabbed his spear once more into the creature, sending it plummeting down with that blow. But he didn't pause to savor that victory, already turning to face the next incoming creature.

The entire time he spent battling the fiends, Ramza kept glancing over towards Reis out of worry. This battle would have been much easier if Agrias and Mustadio were with him. With Agrias' skills as a Holy Knight capable of clearing a path between them and the monsters, Mustadio's skills with the pistol would have easily picked away at the beasts with little effort. However, they weren't with him now. Instead, he had to rely on these two dragoons to distract the fiends from Reis so he could dispatch the beasts that came near. As before, Ramza leap into action.

Once Mjrn rained restorative items down upon the heads of the bloated zombies, Ramza rushed forth with steel at hand. Swiftly, the boy dispatched the nearest Whale Zombie with what seemed to be little effort or no effort at all. The Phoenix Down snatched the bulk of the Whale Zombie's health, harming it critically. It was then that the sharp edge of Ramza's blade cut through its side as he raced past. Slicing it from head to tail, Ramza snatched his blade from the beast's hind as it crashed into the ice. He landed upon the snow a tad breathless, but still full of vigor. Ramza wiped his blade off briefly upon the snow before darting towards the fray once more.

With Kain was preoccupied with another fiend once Mjrn's magic reached him, Ramza sought for another beast to kill. Previously Reis and Mjrn felt the brunt of the Blizzaga spell cast by a Gigan Octopus nearby, so the heretic picked one of those to kill. Their magick were lethal towards them, so the quicker they lulled to death, the better. Rushing forward towards the nearest one, Ramza's blade met with flesh once it tore through the long tentacle of the hideous monster. A loud wail erupted from the beast, one that didn't last for long once the heretic's blade struck it a second time. However, just when he was about to take his leave of it, a painful whirlwind of ice nearly shattered him.

Another one of those green-hued octopuses struck, and much like the other, it was blasting magicks at whoever was near. Ramza fell to his knees, the black spikes of his armor covered with frost.

Battle frenzy never suited Reis and while her beloved proudly served as Captain of the Gryphon Knights, and a skilled warrior at that, she had no taste for it, even though she bore the form of her ancestry. Distracted by her need to spot Beowulf in the violent chaos, she made herself easy prey to the surrounding monsters. The blessed relief she felt as magical healing washed over her had no time for a show of gratitude, for just as she turned to do so, Ramza fell to the ground. They fought to defend her and she in turn would give her all to protect them.

Yet her previous hesitation and retreat placed her too far from the others to be of direct aid to them. And little chance to alter her position presented itself, as a Zombie Whale floated up before her. With no opportunity to dig in to a defensive position, the creature lashed out, using it's mighty tail to knock her off the outcropping and crashing to the ground. A blessing and a curse, for the fall addled her mind for some long seconds. Still once she came to herself, the realization she was mere feet away from her friend came to the forefront of her thinking.

Sacrificing some of her own vitality, she drew from the strength of her bloodline to heal Ramza's wounds. Her Gift served to melt away the frost coating his armor as well. Assured that he could resume fighting in full health, she lashed out with her claws, slashing at the Octopus threatening them both.

Now drawing the attention of two Gigan Octopi, Kain leapt up out of range of simultaneous blasts of Blizzaga. As he descended, he could still feel some of the bitter chill lingering in the air. Trying not to let it bother him, he went for stabbing at one of them with unrelenting motions. A few jabs brought it down with ease, and he took to the air once more to focus on the remaining one.

As he came back down, Kain immediately struck at the Octopus, unrelenting with his attack.

Unfortunately, he was too focused on that attack to see the incoming Venom Breath from a Zombie Whale off to the side. The blast hit him head on, and he gasped as the venom effect set in. It felt like being hit with poison and stop all at once, as he found he was suddenly frozen in place, with that sickening draining of health as well.

Shuddering from the bitter cold of the Blizzaga spell, Ramza shook off the effects immediately once Reis came near. The holy dragon was in bad condition, looking far too weary for his liking. She willingly sacrificed her own health for the sake of his own, an act that would weigh heavily on Ramza’s mind. Making a solemn vow to protect Reis no matter what, Ramza decided to rely upon the aid of some skills that may assist them both. While he wasn’t skilled in the magickal arts, the swordsman did possess a few skills that could help him now. Holding out his hand before him, an odd green and white light engulfed Ramza. Tailwind may lack the same boost as a normal ‘haste’ spell, but it adds additional speed to the caster. Considering that Mjrn already cast hastaga upon them all, Ramza was sure that the extra boost would be enough for now.

Moving much faster than before, Ramza snatched up his sword once more to strike into the side of the Octopus that attacked him. The beast fell in shortly later thanks to the combine efforts of their attacks, especially Kain's lance. However, what of the Whale Zombie that Mjrn attacked. The fiend wasn't dead yet, but soon it will be. Dashing over towards the weary beast, Ramza readied to plunge his blade within the creature’s side to ensure a swift demise.

One by one the monsters fell, vanishing back into the Mist once they'd expired, although for Reis part, she did not notice as her attention drew to the living threats. Only one remained and it drew dangerously close to the male dragoon fighting alongside Ramza. The unfortunate attack which halted him in his tracks put an end to finishing off the Octopus.

Weary though she felt, Reis closed the distance between herself and that final monster. Another spray of lightning bolts came forth, jolting the creature until it too was destroyed. With all her energy spent, she sat back on her haunches in the snow, the once smooth surface riddled signs of battle. Try as she might, she could not spot the one face she sought.

As soon as Mjrn's spell hit and the venom wore off, Kain found that he fortunately could move around once again. The nauseating feeling left, and while his health was depleted somewhat, he felt a lot better than he had a moment ago. He sprang into action once again, raising and swinging his spear wildly overhead before realizing that the area was actually clear of targets.

Seeing that last Octopus go down, Kain turned and gazed around. The area where they'd been fighting was still incredibly cold, but there didn't seem to be enemies present to blast any new spells at them. Turning now to the group, he nodded a thanks to Mjrn, before focusing on the dragon. Mostly, he wondered what they would do next... or what they could do.

With the fiends now dispatched, Ramza sheathed his sword. The beasts have been sent to their Maker, and now peace settles once more. Gazing at his comrades, Ramza's looked to Reis with a faint smile. "She is Reis, Mjrn." He answered on the behalf of the dragonkin. "She truly is the one I spoke of. Although, I cannot understand why she's amongst us now." Half-expecting Beowulf to be near, the swordsman glanced towards his right only to see ice and snow.

A deep sigh escaped him as he looked towards Reis again. "I am sorry, but he...he is not here."

Reis looked from the female speaking to her, to Ramza. Had there been any doubt any further doubts that she might be a mere wild dragon and not who her friend claimed her to be, that could well be settled by her response to them both. No lashing out, no angry clawed swipes, no enraged shows of breathed fire, nary a snarl. Clearly she understood all too well what was being said, even though she could not answer for herself. Rather, her response showed in her actions, for she lay on the ground, eyes dimming from disappointment as her face rested on the snow. What point in continuing on if she was to be deprived of her beloved again?

"You are expecting someone else?" Kain looked first toward the dragon with his question, but then directed his gaze toward Ramza, hoping he might shed some light on that mystery. He knew they probably ought to settle what they could do next, but perhaps it was best to focus upon one thing at a time.

He returned his eyes to Reis, fascinated as ever by any of her kind.

Feeling a pang of guilt for being the bearer of bad news, Ramza turned away from Reis once the two dragoons began to inquire for answers. He knew naught of a way to free Reis from this hideous curse without the aid of auracite, and judging from what Agrias told him, the stones don't exist here. Letting a sigh escape his lips, the troubled Beoulve answered both dragoons question.

"Her beloved, Beowulf, is a former Templar hailing from the Knight Templar Order. He is a companion of mine, someone who has yet to appear on Gaia. While I trust that he is well, I worry for those left behind." He shifted his attention from Kain and over towards Mjrn.

"As for curing her, such a stone doesn't here in this world. I speak of the zodiac stones. Only the Auracite of Cancer can cure her malady."

After weeks upon weeks of wandering lost and alone, of being chased and attacked, having others speak to her as an equal and not a monstrosity to destroy came as quite a relief. Enough so, that Reis lifted her head to look at the others, rather than continue wallowing in her disappointment. Much of what she saw and heard left her perplexed. Never had she encountered or heard of a creature with the appearance of the woman with the tall ears. Nor was she familiar with lands dubbed Gaia. It stood to reason something was indeed wrong when she did not wake outside Lesalia where she had last laid her head. How much time had passed since then? Weeks? Months?

Discussion of a cure held her attention. How could Ramza know such things? To her knowledge, no way existed to return her as she once was. Auracite? The stone they'd given him? That held her hope? Far too many questions came to mind and without a way to express them, hearing that it mattered not, Reis slumped back down onto the snow once more.

Kain frowned, also understanding all too well what it felt like to be denied the one he cared about. Although his situation was different, since he'd never deserved Rosa to begin with and never could. Ramza's other answer was also disappointing, for Reis' sake.

"You're certain this Auracite can't be obtained? How or where did you gain it before?" But Kain didn't sound too hopeful, and there was even a somewhat- for Kain- sympathetic glance spared for Reis. Still, knowing more about it would help, just to be sure. For all he knew, though, it was like the Crystals of his own world- lost to them here, but assumed to still be at home.

Reis' demeanor truly worried Ramza, especially considering he could only imagine how alone she felt now. Allowing a dejected sigh to escape him, Ramza turned his attention once the duo spoke. "I...I am not sure where the auracite could be in this realm, but..." He paused as he remembered the trials he faced in Ivalice. After being chased for days by the Inquisition, Ramza honestly held contempt for those wicked stones. He knew that the auracite possessed both the power for good and evil, but those who've wielded their power have all used the auracite for evil.

"If the stones reappear here in this realm, then I fear for Gaia itself." Ramza's words were as stern as his gaze. "The auracite, particularly the Zodiac Stones, aren't artifacts that should be taken lightly." He began. "These stones are holy relics of the Church of Gladados, prisons that house the demonic beasts residing within them. If the wielder possesses a pure heart, the stones act on the behalf of good. However, if they are wielded by those are possessed by treachery, and then the Lucavi inside of the stone shall claim them."

Taking a quick glance at Reis, Ramza frowned. "The stone of Cancer healed her because of her honest and pure thoughts. If she had been another, she would have become a fiend."

Inwardly, Kain felt a deep sense of dread at hearing that. "Those stones sound powerful... but far too dangerous." Not only that, but be knew well what would happen if he ever tried using such a thing. He'd be claimed by that evil force and turn into a monster. There was too much darkness in him for any other outcome.

Trying to conceal his fears, Kain added, "And there is no other way of curing her?"

Casting his eyes upon Kain briefly, Ramza noticed the smallest tinge of fear within the dragoon's demeanor when he mentioned the stones. In all truth, Kain's worries regarding the auracite are well-founded. Ramza knows all too well of what happens to those of greedy hearts, he knows how the power of these devils can warp a man. While he bared some immunity to the lull of the auracite because of his ancestry to Germonique, others haven't fared as lucky against them.

Truly hoping that the stones weren't here on Gaia, Ramza remembered something that Agrias told him days before. "While I know of none other way to cure her, I do think my comrade, Agrias, is searching for the stones now. If they are here, we shall find them, but if not...we need another plan." He looked to Mjrn now. "We can try the healing springs, but we need to protect Reis from other hunters."

Wondering if the, King of Figaro would object to having a dragon live amongst his people, Ramza tried to think of any idea of how they could protect Reis from harm until they found a cure. "We must talk more. I shall give word to my companions, and all five of us shall speak."

Nodding thoughtfully, Kain considered that. At least he was warned about the stones and their power, so he'd know to avoid them if he encountered them. He couldn't risk what would happen.

"That would be the best course of action, until that cure can be found. They must be informed that she's no threat to them..." Especially given recent dragon attacks. Again, Kain understood to some extent what they were going through... having Zephyr had shown him that some reacted fearfully to any dragons, even an infant.

Hoping that they could hide Reis for now, Ramza nodded in agreement to Kain and Mjrn. It would make no sense for them to linger here within the tundra any longer. "Aye, we shall make an announcement regarding her appearance but I desire that we keep her guarded." Fear makes the brightest minds into the dullest, and even if they did state that Reis wasn't a threat; some would still seek her blood.

"Let us go." Ramza said with a slight smile. "We can continue conversing within warmer settings."

Kain could understand that. Getting people to realize that not all dragons were a danger to them could be a formidable task to accomplish. People were more likely to react in fear if she were left unguarded and with no one to explain. Perhaps they could determine a suitable place for her to stay, eventually.

"Very well," Kain agreed, ready to leave with the others.
