Summary: Reeve decides to make the trek from Orbonne to Lindblum, and makes a discovery about himself along the way.
Locations: Orbonne Monastery, Dragon's Gate, Lindblum
Date: Late September
Warnings: None

Reeve made his way to the second floor of the Orbonne Monastery and found the bag of food that had been left there. Eating sparsely from it, he sat near the wall and waited for the other person to arrive as the sun began to fade...

He woke up the next day, having apparently stretched out on his side sometime during the night. The morning light was just peeking through the windows, leaving shining rectangles on the walls. Looking around and noticing nothing much had changed, he decided this would probably be as good a time as any to leave. If the trip was too long, he wanted to spend as little time outdoors in the dark as possible. Reeve looked through the bag and grabbed a small amount of food for now, then took enough for a few small meals and slid it into the pockets of his coat before standing and making his way down the stairs and toward the nearby front door, walking into the sunlight of Gaia for the first time.

Blinking his eyes at the brightness of the morning in the mountains, he looked to the side and saw a well there, the bucket hanging from a crank. Immediately making his way over, Reeve lowered the bucket until the rope began to go limp, then waited a moment as it seemed to be slowly pulled more taut. Grasping the crank with both hands, he slowly but steadily lifted the bucket back up to the top of the well and set the ratchet to keep it there. He cupped his hands and scooped some of the water out, drinking slowly so as to avoid any cramping. After he had his fill, he took some more water and splashed it on his face, the chill of the water making his senses come more fully awake. Not seeing anything around to carry the rest of the water in, Reeve tilted the bucket and poured the rest back down the well, before turning and setting foot atop the path that ran down the slope.

Taking his phone and examining the map, he turned until he faced Lindblum. Most of the city was hidden by distance and the peaks, but if he focused closely, he could see something hidden behind the mountain range. He knew that he could make it there easily... if it were a level, straight path. However, after doing a little more examination, he found that the mountains seemed impenetrable from his direction, unless he looped around them somewhat to the north and came upon Dragon's Gate. This appeared to be the pass through the mountains and into Lindblum that Reeve was looking for. It was not the shortest of walks, but he had managed to stay in shape over the years, and regardless, that city was not about to grow legs and climb over the mountains just to greet him. Taking one last look back at the monastery, Reeve turned and began slowly making his way down the twisting path that led from the rocky promontory to the green floor below.

After a little while, Reeve's mind began to wander as he progressed down the mountainside. How had so many people come to be here? And so many that he knew? It was unbelievable. Especially since it seemed that even some of his friends had arrived far before he did... but he had seen them back home! How could they be here and there at the same ti-?

Reeve's foot slipped on a rock at the edge of the path. Turning and pressing his hands firmly to the rock, he shifted his balance and pulled himself back further onto the path before rising back to his feet. This was not the time for idle speculation or wonderment. He needed to make sure he arrived safely. If he had another mishap like that, he might not arrive at all...

The next 2 hours passed without incident. At one point, Reeve did see what appeared to be a mountain goat standing a few hundred feet from the side of the path, but he decided it would be best to not attract the goat's attention as he progressed. The gray rocks which lined the mountain slowly began to be replaced by green grass as he reached the base of the mountain. Turning and looking up, he remembered the place, and had a feeling that at some point in the future, he would almost definitely be visiting there again. The opportunity to learn from all the tomes that were scattered about the place was just too great.

The path continued on for a while through the grass, strange yet familiar trees randomly dotting the area, yet slowly growing in number as he drew further from the mountain. Reeve checked with his phone's map repeatedly, making sure he was heading in the proper direction. He looked around and realized that he did not feel like spending a night out in nature. At least not this night, and not here. He reached into a pocket and drew out a fruit. Digging his thumbs into it, he pulled the skin from it and then began to pull at the flesh of the fruit, pulling one piece off and popping it into his mouth happily. It tasted great, but it wasn't all he needed at this point.

Reeve stopped and sighed lightly as he listened. There was a sound in the background. It was faint but it was there.. it was... the sound of running water! There much be a spring or a creek or a small river or something nearby! Reeve put his phone into a pocket and started to wander from the path, going one way and then the other, until he was able to figure out the sound was coming from his left.

Reeve made his way through trees and around bushes, all the while hearing the trickling noise growing. Finally, he came to the source of the sound: a small pond, being fed by a thin stream, the runoff of a small waterfall that wound its way down the mountains that surrounded Lindblum. Reeve walked across toward the near edge of the water... and his foot slipped on a rock that lay near the edge of the pool. His ankle twisted beneath him as he came down, and a gasp of pain was pulled from his lips. He shifted and rolled to get his weight off the ankle, then slowly sat up, leaning forward to grasp the aching joint. He bit his lip and hissed as he ran his hand over his ankle, feeling it tender to the touch... but then a strange white light appeared from the palm of his hand. A warmth ran through his ankle as his hand lay upon it, and when it dissipated, so too did the pain. Reeve blinked at this. He never remembered having any power like that before. He was able to... no, this wasn't the time to think about that. Could he have... learned healing? That would be impossible... but then a few days ago, he would have thought waking up on another world would be impossible as well.

Reeve slowly turned over and got to his knees, then raised himself up by his uninjured foot first. As he got up to his feet, he tentatively placed the foot with the ankle that he had just twisted down... the pain was gone. He placed more weight on it. Yes, the pain was totally gone. Something strange had happened, but right now was not the place or time to figure out how or why. he knelt down carefully at the water's edge and scooped up some water to drink. After he had slaked his thirst, he leaned back and climbed back to his feet, turning back toward the path he had followed so far.

As time went on and the sun climbed in the sky, then passed its zenith, Reeve looked around at the world of Gaia. It seemed so familiar, yet so different. Flowers that he had known to be pink might be blue, or a bird in the sky would have a call that sounded just off to his ears. The dichotomy of similarity and difference was taking a little time to set in.

Unfortunately, there is one thing that seems to be constant, no matter where one is: the sound of growling usually means there is something large enough to do damage and it's near enough to notice you. And that is the sound Reeve heard through the trees off to his right.

His head snapped around in the direction of the noise. It was far enough away that he knew he wasn't going to be jumped immediately, but close enough that if he made too much noise, whatever was growling would quite possibly come for him. Stealing repeated glances toward the right, Reeve slowly and carefully made his way forward, making sure he didn't step on a wayward branch or kick a random stone and give away his position even more. He pulled out his phone and glanced down at it. Dragon's Gate wasn't that far away, thank the heavens.

As Reeve was putting the phone away, however, one of his fingers slipped and a solitary, but distinct beep came from the phone before it disappeared into his pocket. Nearly instantly, the growling beast seemed to respond. This was not what Reeve needed right now. He moved a little faster right now, wanting to get to Dragon's Gate as fast as possible without turning his back to whatever this beast was. As he moved along, however, the growling started to grow louder, closer. This was not going to be easy for him.

Reeve knew that in this situation, fighting was not an option. He had no idea what exactly it was that was drawing near, but if he had his way, he wouldn't find out. He sidled along the trail, turned to the side to keep an eye on the brush at side of the road that hid the beast from view. A few long tense moments passed, every minor noise of the land sounding like a cannon being fired to his ears, but nothing he could attribute directly to whatever it was that he had heard earlier.

Suddenly, the growl came once again, but from a direction which made him freeze in mid-step: the sound was coming from the right still, but from in front of him. Whatever it was ended up getting between him and the entrance to Lindblum. This was NOT what he hoped for. Reeve reached into his pocket slowly, his eyes fixed off to the right of the trail where the sound seemed to have come from. He figured that he could at least get off a message of emergency to all and someone might come and rescue him... if he survived that long. His eyes darted from the side of the path to the phone and back repeatedly as he held his position, unwilling to progress any closer to the sound.

Suddenly, the bushes at the side of the road began to shake. Reeve tensed himself and rested his thumb atop the transmission button. Out from the foliage dashed... what appeared to be a small pink creature which what appeared to be almost like hair-covered horns extending back from its head. Reeve couldn't get a that good of a look as it swiftly dove out of sight to the opposite side of the road, dashing through the bushes and grasses. Exhaling a breath he hadn't realized he was holding, Reeve sighed softly as he went to put his phone away... when an animal resembling a large wolf raced from the right, growling in a very familiar way as it sped across the road, engaged in a chase for what would probably be its next meal. He stood there, stunned and silent for a moment, turning to the left as the sound of cracking branches and angry growls slowly faded.

Reeve blinked a few times and shook his head, feeling a small shiver run through him. "If I were just a few seconds earlier, I might have been that monster's prey," he pondered, thankful for the slight delay he had back at the pool. Resuming his trek with just a slightly faster pace to his steps, Reeve found himself at Dragon's Gate about 15 minutes later. Passing through to the inside of the mountainous ring, he finally glimpsed the city of Lindblum before him, spires reaching up to the sky as the light of the sinking sun reflected off its walls. It was not the home he knew, but for now, it would be his place of refuge.

Making the trek up toward the gate of the city proper, he took his phone out. Entering a few commands he wondered, "I hope Rufus has some wine where he is... or at least knows where I can find some. After today, I most certainly need a drink."
