Characters: Cissnei, Reno, Zack, Tseng
Progress: Closed; follow-up post here
Summary: The Turks are out and about, investigating Cissnei's Crystal Chalice
Location: Qu's Marsh and the routes in-between
Date: September 30, 1804
Warnings: Reno cussing, Cissnei being somewhat emotional, violence and monster killing
After Reno helped Sephiroth to settle in at the mansion in Lindblum, the two began to trek to Qu's Marsh. According to amassed information, there was a strange tree at the Marsh. Maybe it's a Myrrh tree like the ones the Selkies spoke of? They wouldn't know until they got there. The Chalice had been such a mystery to Cissnei, and now that a total of three people had a Chalice, there surely had to be a reason why they all found one.
They walked across terrains, talking of nothing and everything, sometimes staying silent for the sake of Cissnei, who sometimes truly could not handle Reno's confusing motormouth. It was turning late, a little too late, but luckily they managed to get most of the way to the Marsh. Both decide that it was a good time to stop and rest and finish the rest of the trip the next morning.
Cissnei starts to set out her sleeping bag underneath a large tree they came across. "Hey, Reno... Um..." She pauses and tries to figure out how to word her question without offending him. Rufus seemed quite flat about what he told her. "Rufus... Rufus told me that Veld's daughter was behind AVALANCHE. When? Why?"

Date: 2010-10-15 02:28 am (UTC)And that's where she noticed something. "Uh... Reno." All kinds of creatures bared their teeth and hissed at the Turks as they got closer to the tree, as if on cue. One mu pounced at Cissnei, but she deftly beheaded it and caught Rekka. "I hope you have a plan, because I haven't come up with one."

Date: 2010-10-15 02:35 am (UTC)"Shit." Well, that about summed it up. "At least these guys are easy enough," he added, whipping out his EMR and pressing the little button that had it humming to life. Smack-down time.
He flashed a grin at the girl. "Keep hacking heads off until either they run out of heads, or we need to call for backup. And don't forget to collect anything they drop. Something tells me we're gonna need it." There was a devilish look in his eyes - but nothing that showed he was overly concerned about the situation. Yet.
"Deal with things as they come, Ciss. It's all we can do right now." And with those words, his EMR came crashing down on the front and side of a charging sahagin, sizzling the wet creature and sending it scurrying backward with a cry of pain.

Date: 2010-10-15 02:44 am (UTC)Cissnei groaned in pain as one of the mus bit into her leg. Angrily, she stabbed its head with one point and pried it off. "There goes my suit," she muttered flatly, picking up the potions and unceremoniously throwing them into her pack.

Date: 2010-10-15 02:57 am (UTC)"You're more important than the damned fabric, Ciss. Just keep fighting!" The call came as another mu hit the sloppy mud, dead and still twitching from the electric currents emitted from Reno's Mag-Rod. There seemed to be no end to these things, though, and even as careful and as quick as he was, he'd not gone through the battles without some pain to show for it.
Perhaps the creatures were attracted by the myrrh tree. It was certainly a possibility, considering that there were creatures he recognized from this world... and some that were entirely different.
Speaking of...
The mu that had started to charge him suddenly turned around and fled, leaving Reno puzzled - but only for a moment.
"Oh... oh, fu..c.. ...Cissnei!" He pointed to a lumbering, rampaging beast headed straight for them. There was no mistaking it, either - it looked almost the same, regardless of the world (or at least it would seem). "Behemoth, two-o'clock!"
This was NOT going to be fun. He made sure he had a few potions ready, downed one to heal the wounds he'd sustained from the previous fights, then charged. It was all he could think of to do. They could take down a behemoth together, he knew it. "Swear, I'm going to eat a steak when we get back," he grunted through clenched teeth as EMR met thick hide for a few seconds before he darted backward.

Date: 2010-10-15 03:08 am (UTC)"Find a weak spot!" she shouted, flinging her shuriken at the behemoth's nose, hoping, praying that its nose wasn't covered in thick hide like the rest of its body. When she caught Rekka, she stabbed an oncoming mu and flicked it away. "Does it even have a weak spot!?" Cissnei asked desperately when she caught up with Reno. Of course it did, it had to, but at the moment, it just wasn't clicking.

Date: 2010-10-15 03:17 am (UTC)And then it attacked. Magic, Reno said? Well, magic this thing had. And suddenly, Reno knew just how that poor sahagin felt as an electric currant slammed into him, making fingers and toes twitch and voice crack. "Sonuva... I'm going to display this thing's tail on my wall when we're done with this," he insisted, closing his eyes for a second. "Hey Ciss... Ever learn the attack Turk Light? Rude and I were good at it, but..." Rude wasn't there. But Cissnei was. It was all he could think of that might put a dent in the thing. "At least it's not a King Behemoth. Or a Grand Dragon..." he added somewhat cheerfully. Somewhat. Because it was really hard to be cheerful in a situation like this.

Date: 2010-10-15 03:44 am (UTC)"Magic." She looked down and saw that she held a crank. It was go time, yet she suppressed a grin of accomplishment. Cissnei tumbled and slipped between creatures to get behind the behemoth. "Be a good dear," she said to it, kissed it for good luck and threw it with an accuracy that surprised even her. The crank exploded into a massive Firaga attack on the behemoth's back. It roared with pain when the fire burned it.

Date: 2010-10-15 03:52 am (UTC)So he hit the deck. As literally as one could. He ducked down in the reeds of the swamp, fighting back the urge to groan aloud as the muck and mire soaked into the clothes as he knelt down, shirt and pants now completely saturated. Damn. But blue eyes found just what Cissnei had managed to obtain. "Hell yeah!" he insisted, standing back up to distract the monster to give his partner the chance to lob the item at the beast.
The resulting explosion had the thing roaring, and Reno grinning. "Way to go, Cissnei!" he shouted before rushing the creature and smacking it right between the eyes with his EMR, giving the thing a dose of its own electric medicine. One more roar of pain - they'd worked it down rather well by now. "One more hit. Get it good and it's dead!" Or at least he'd stake a good bet on it.

Date: 2010-10-15 04:05 am (UTC)So what was the Turk to do? Wing it, just like Reno said. She crouched and aimed low across the behemoth's ankles, maybe Rekka could dig deep enough into the hide to make it collapse or at least take out partially one of its legs. Cissnei leaped and sprinted to catch Rekka on the other side. She slid to stop while panting and gasping for breath. "That better have done it."

Date: 2010-10-17 04:32 pm (UTC)He would be a very shocking target for the behemoth while Cissnei went for those legs. Thus, he launched himself at the thing's head, smacking it a few times with his EMR - and aiming for the most painful spots he could think of. Pre-existing burns and cuts.
He saw Rekka slice into the creature's limbs, and gave a whoop as the behemoth tried to rear again - roaring. And then ... it fell over. Dead.
Leading him to scurry around to collect what they could from the monsters killed so far. Orichalcum. Hi-Potions. Some antidotes. A soft or two. Things they would likely need in abundance later - and not in the pitiful amounts they currently had. One even had a tent on it - a tent! How the hell these beasts managed to acquire tents, he'd never know. But they'd put it to good use after this. Into his bag it went, along with a number of items. And then, after tossing a potion or two at Cissnei, he downed two himself before scanning the area.
"We might be in for more than that. I'm calling for back-up. I have a sinking feeling we're going to need it..."

Date: 2010-10-17 11:07 pm (UTC)Cissnei crossed her arms. "I wouldn't doubt it. The high life," she reminded herself. "This is the high life." She slapped a gnat that was crawling across her gloved hand and swat away several more. She didn't even want to think how she looked right now. "Did we get anything good from the behemoth? Anything worth selling?" Because she wanted some major gil for a spa day and new clothes.
no subject
Date: 2010-10-18 12:06 am (UTC)"Orichalcum valuable enough for you? I believe that'll buy us new uniforms and have some left over for some treats for both of us and whoever comes out here to help." He fished the rare mineral out of his pocket and tossed it toward Cissnei to let the girl have a look. "Just one of those would likely pay for an apartment in Midgar for a few months. Maybe we can take down another one of those monstrosities of nature and really have some fun after this..."
A glance was given to the tree, and the monsters still in the area. "Think you'll be okay fighting a few of the smaller critters for now? Zack should be here in an hour or two... we can kill time and monsters until he gets here, and stock up a little. Might be worth it. I can't imagine a behemoth being the only big nasty guarding that tree."
If Cissnei felt up for it, then the little monsters would be taken out happily. If not, they'd stay in the reeds and muck until Zack got there. Either way, Reno hoped the time it took Zack to arrive was short.

Date: 2010-10-18 01:52 am (UTC)"I challenge you, Reno," she began, pointing Rekka at him, "to a duel. Think you can count and fight at the same time, or are you too old for that?" They were here and he did say she needed some fun in her life. Might as well, right? Two hours of simply killing little monsters while super SOLDIER Zack dropped in wasn't that completely appealing to Cissnei.

Date: 2010-10-18 04:43 am (UTC)"Too old? Never. Though I have to ask - you don't find our lovely location worth of lounging about in?" He winked, then stood up straight. "Only rule is that if we run into anything behemoth-like or worse, the game ends and we go back to some real teamwork. Deal?" Of course, if Cissnei was in trouble, of course he'd help her. And he knew the opposite would be true, as well.

Date: 2010-10-18 06:39 pm (UTC)"Deal. Hope you can keep up!" Cissnei called out as she shot off full speed, flinging Rekka at three oncoming mus. She frowned when one of the mus managed to dodge the hit and jumped at her. She planted herself firmly into the ground, or well as firmly as it would allow at least, and shifted her weight away from the mu. Which is exactly when she got hit by a fire spell from a dark bomb and caused Cissnei to shriek mildly in pain. She glared at it and sent Rekka flying, knowing that one hit wasn't going to be enough. She flung it once more and cracked open an newly acquired potion, throwing the empty bottle at the bomb for good measure.

Date: 2010-10-19 12:22 am (UTC)Right.
Sahagins. Not exactly the easiest or the hardest creatures in the world... but perfect to rack up a good tally. And he'd just finished smacking one to smithereens when he heard the cry from Cissnei. Damn. He was going to lose this wager, if only because he had too much loyalty to his fellow Turks. Hearing any of them in pain wasn't exactly fun for him, and his instinct was to help. He hesitated, eying his own targets at the same time paying close attention to Cissnei, and only when she was healed again (and nearly laughed at the flinging of that bottle...) did he give his full regard to the enemies around him.
Which gave THEM ample opportunity to get HIM. As soon as he turned fully to face them, one had raked its claws along his arm, slicing through the jacket at one spot and leaving Reno hissing to keep from yelling out. A potion was taken, the bottle discarded, and his EMR crackled to life as it hit the side of the slimy creature, sending it to an early death. "Screw you and your cheap tricks," he muttered at it before taking on the next.
And so it would go for a couple of hours. Monsters fell, some landing hits on Reno and others not quite so lucky. Some requiring him to down another potion, others too easily taken down. His count was somewhere in the twenties before he finally waved to Cissnei, pointing out to a blurry, darkish blob in the distance. "Is that... Zack?" He wasn't sure - whatever or whoever it was appeared too far away to make out details, but it could be...

Date: 2010-10-19 12:37 am (UTC)Using a dead mu's pelt, she cleaned off the blood as she walked over to Reno. "You think it's him?" She spat a little clot of blood aside, trying to make out if it really was Zack or not. She pursed her lips for a moment. Well, this was embarrassing. Zack had seen her in her perfect uniform and in a swimsuit, but never like this. Between being half-naked on a beach and looking and smelling like yesterday's trash, this was the more embarrassing of the two. Gross. Bath salts, she told herself mentally. Lots of them.
"Get anything worthwhile? I got a few of these," Cissnei informed, holding out several items similar to the crank she used before, but smaller and probably with weaker magical powers.

Date: 2010-10-19 12:55 am (UTC)"Got a few bomb fragments, like yours. Nothing else that's combative, though. Just some more hi-potions and antidotes. Which will probably come in handy... and yeah! That is Zack!" He hopped up and gave a loud whoop to gain the other man's attention, hoping he didn't gain the attention of anything unwanted in the process. "Zack!" Now that the SOLDIER was there? They could try to proceed further into the muck, and head for that blasted, troublesome tree.

Date: 2010-10-19 01:12 am (UTC)And this marsh was disgusting. They hadn't been lying about that, that was for sure. Zack may have been from the country, but Shiva. This was gonna take a while to wade through. And as he realized the Buster sword was getting dragged through all of that, too, he apologized profusely to Angeal, even if his mentor couldn't hear him.
While he trudged, he had to dispatch some little monsters, regrettably not gaining too many items. But then he saw some battles up ahead and two heads of red hair. Yep, definitely the troublesome Turks.
And a few minutes later he was recognized. He raised a hand in greeting and finally waded up to the others, now suitably disgusting, too.
"You guys look cute." The teasing was heavy in his voice.

Date: 2010-10-19 01:32 am (UTC)"We're trying to get close to that tree," she began as if she was debriefing him. This was still a mission, Zack or no Zack. "It's a myrrh tree and a chalice in my pack should collect the myrrh it produces. We're thinking it only gets worse from here on out."
no subject
Date: 2010-10-19 01:41 am (UTC)"Good to see you, man. And don't you know? Mud's the latest fashion. All the rage with the ladies. Right Ciss?" He winked at the woman at his side, then nodded to the tree.
"We're hoping, despite what Cissnei's said, that calling you out here is going to just be a nice, happy reunion of sorts. But since that behemoth showed up..." He trailed off, figuring Zack could figure out that it was better safe than sorry in this case. "Be prepared for anything. Make sure your equipment's up to snuff - we want to come out of this hellhole alive and laughing about it." He cast Zack a bit of a grin, arching a brow in question.
"Between two Turks and a 1st Class SOLDIER, I think we can whoop a little ass, right?"
Famous last words, Reno? He hoped not.

Date: 2010-10-19 01:52 am (UTC)Okay, so he had been through weirder, but...this was just odd to him. Awkwardly, he patted Reno's shoulder and pulled away to look at this tree they kept going on about. So it was a special tree that was more than likely well protected.
Awesome.
He turned to Cissnei, trusting her opinion more than Reno's. "So I'm here for the muscle. We got a plan?" He doubted it, but even a semblance of an idea of some sort of general strategy would be preferred to running in like barbarians.

Date: 2010-10-19 02:06 am (UTC)Cissnei held Rekka out at her side, making sure the pack full of potions, hi-potions and all other goodies was in reach. "Hope you're ready." She made a mental note to personally thank Zack and Reno for going through all this trouble. Well, Reno had something of an obligation, but he had stuck with her and this chalice thing since the start. If she got lucky and found another really valuable item, she was going to use the gil on them two.
no subject
Date: 2010-10-19 02:15 am (UTC)Gah, you're going to jinx the whole thing, aren't you, Reno? But he shrugged and held out a few potions to Zack. "We have a bit more - the little things around the area are dropping them like they're hot. Same with hi-potions. "Keep your strength up, too - don't let yourself get worn down. I don't want to have to report in to Tseng that I lost you a second time..." A second time? Lost Zack? To what, pray tell, was Reno referring? Wouldn't Zack love to know. But now wasn't the time for it. "Watch each others' backs, and kill as many of the little guys as you can as we go - what they drop will likely come in handy."
no subject
Date: 2010-10-19 02:33 am (UTC)"And people wonder why SOLDIER and the Turks don't work so hot together." He sighed. "All right. I'll take point since I've got the most raw strength right now and you two back me up."
Though he had to look at Reno with a confused expression when he mentioned "losing" him. What Tseng had to do with anything was news to him.
He pulled the Buster sword off his back and looked at the blade, and the memories ingrained in the blade. "Sound good?"
